GLP-1 access in New York

Find out which pharmacy benefit will handle the prescription

If your prescription is being billed to NYRx, New York’s Medicaid pharmacy program, use its current drug list and authorization resources. Do not assume that rules found for an employer plan, Medicare or a different benefit apply to NYRx. Have your insurance information and the exact medication name ready when you contact the pharmacy or prescribing practice. Ask which benefit receives the claim and whether prior authorization is needed for that prescription. A company saying that it helps New York residents with insurance has not answered either question. Clarify the benefit before agreeing to a paid insurance-assistance subscription.[1][2]

Wegovy and Zepbound have different NYRx criteria

The current NYRx drug list describes a cardiovascular-disease pathway for Wegovy and an obstructive-sleep-apnea pathway for Zepbound, each with additional requirements. The dedicated worksheets ask for different clinical information. Wegovy’s worksheet includes cardiovascular history, while Zepbound’s includes sleep testing and treatment history. These are not interchangeable requests, and a prescription for weight management alone does not establish that a listed pathway applies. Ask your clinician to review the current criteria for the product and reason for treatment. This guide does not determine your eligibility or extend one medication’s criteria to another.[1][3][4]

Use the medication-specific worksheet with the prescribing team

NYRx maintains dedicated Wegovy and Zepbound worksheets alongside its other authorization forms. They distinguish starting treatment from continuing it and ask about prior therapy, including treatment under a previous insurer. Tell the practice about a recent plan change and request relevant records from your former prescriber. The worksheets specify that requests come from the prescriber or the prescriber’s employee, rather than an unrelated third party. Before paying for help, ask who will actually prepare and submit the request. Keep the response so the treating team can address a missing document or explain why the benefit does not apply.[2][3][4]

New York license registration and physician discipline are separate checks

Ask for the treating professional’s full name, profession and New York license number. The State Education Department’s verification guidance explains how to read license and registration information and directs readers to its current search service. Match the person and profession, rather than searching only for the telehealth brand. For physicians and physician assistants, disciplinary information is maintained separately by the Department of Health’s Office of Professional Medical Conduct. The education department’s guidance explains that distinction. Registration information is one credential check; it does not tell you whether the practice offers your medication, accepts your benefit or provides the follow-up you need.[5]

Verify the pharmacy establishment that will dispense the medication

Request the dispensing pharmacy’s legal name, location and license number independently of the prescribing practice. New York’s verification guidance distinguishes pharmacy establishments from manufacturers and wholesalers. Check the category that corresponds to the business that will fill your prescription and compare the identifying details. A pharmacist’s individual license is not the same record as the pharmacy establishment. If a marketing company cannot identify the dispensing business, that question remains unresolved even when it has named a licensed clinician. Ask who will answer dispensing, shipment and prescription questions before accepting medication charges.[5]

Compare the subscription separately from the pharmacy claim

Ask what you owe for care while an authorization is pending, what happens after a denial and whether the membership renews automatically. Get separate amounts for medication, visits, labs and delivery. Confirm that the service can treat you in your current location and fulfill the prescription to your New York address. If you are changing insurers or prescribers, ask how it handles the gap and transfers records. Keep any unknown medication charge visible in your budget. Neither an introductory subscription price nor a national advertised rate establishes your total cost in New York.

Use the monthly cost calculator once you have comparable initial and renewal quotes.
